distilled water. The medium was prepared by placing 40 to 50 sterile rice grains in each sterile petri dish containing 25 ml of sterile distilled water. After hydration the rice grains became submerged beneath a thin layer of water, which discouraged the growth of molds. Twenty samples of soil from various sources were tested by this method. The results of a few of these are shown in table 1. Samples of water from various rivers, creeks, and springs were tested for the presence of Chromobacterium sp., but none was found in any sample. Figure 1 is a photograph of a plate culture of a strain of Chromobacterium sp. growing on rice grains, suspended in distilled water. Eighteen strains have been isolated by streaking and restreaking on plain nutrient agar until purity of each culture was assured. Some of the isolates were identified as Chromobacterium violaceum while others resembled Chromobacterium amethystinum. Identifications were made using the key to the genus in Bergey's Manual of Determinative Bacteriology (Breed et al., 1948). The author hesitates to assign species names to the isolates until a more thorough study of them can be made. It is quite apparent that the present key to the genus is rather inadequate. It would appear from these results that the natural habitat of some strains of Chromobacterium sp. is soil rather than water. The occurrence of Chromobacterium sp. in soil appears to be wide spread rather than local. The factors which control their numbers in soil have not been determined.

Fermentation of amino acids by Micrococcus aerogenes.

The anaerobic micrococci described by Foubert and Douglas (1948a) may be divided into 3 groups on the basis of ability to degrade organic compounds: (1) those capable of fermenting only glycine (Douglas, 1951), (2) those able to degrade purines (Whiteley and Douglas, 1951) and many organic acids (Foubert and Douglas, 1948b), and (3) those able to ferment purines and a limited number of amino ac...

Mechanism of the allantoin fermentation.

Allantoin occurs widely in nature, where it arises from the oxidation of uric acid (1, 2). Animals, plants, and bacteria convert allantoin to glyoxylic acid and urea via allantoic acid (14). The aerobic oxidation of allantoin by a species of Pseudomonas has been studied in detail (4), but the pathway of allantoin fermentation is incompletely known. That the aerobic and anaerobic pathways of all...

Use of shake cultures in a semisolid thioglycolate medium for differentiating staphylococci from micrococci.

The standard diagnostic test for differentiating staphylococci from micrococci is based on the ability of the former to produce acid anaerobically in a glucose-containing growth medium. This test has been modified to provide greater convenience, easier interpretation of results, and better correlation with deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) base composition. In the modified test, shake cultures in Bre...

A serological method for distinguishing coagulase-negative staphylococci from micrococci.

Absorbed antisera prepared against heat-killed suspensions of a coagulase-negative staphylococcus and of a micrococcus were used in a slide-agglutination test. A collection of 176 coagulase-negative aerobic cocci, from which Staphylococcus aureus had been excluded, was classified into staphylococci and micrococci by means of the test for anaerobic utilization of glucose. Of 113 staphylococci, 9...
